Bergamot

The princess of citrus fruits

The rare and sophisticated bergamot grows almost exclusively in southern Italy, where it has established a small but refined luxury abode, a coastline in Calabria that’s barely 70 kilometers long. The Mediterranean climate and fertile soil provide it with exactly what it needs – the ideal conditions for developing its unique flavor.

Botanists disagree about its origins. It could be the exotic offspring of a bitter orange and a lime – a theory primarily based on its appearance: round like a bitter orange, bright-green like a lime. Or might there be a citron lemon in its family tree? Who knows? What we do know is that the bergamot is loaded with vitamin C.

And what about its taste? Bitter, fresh, and slightly sour, perfect for anyone who appreciates subtle flavors. In southern Italian cooking, it’s a superstar, whether in the form of refreshing sorbet or a fancy marmalade. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll be a fan for life!
